Groundhogs are a rodent that can be found across North America. They hibernate in borrows during the winter, so they eat as much as they can during the summer months. By eating all summer they build up fat reserves that help them survive the cold. Groundhog Day is celebrated on February 2nd when most groundhogs come out from their hibernation. Tradition says that if a groundhog sees its shadow that day, there will be six more weeks of winter. Students can create their own groundhog coming up from hibernation with a cute puppet. Gather up Popsicle sticks, small paper cups, and a picture of a groundhog. Have students poke a hole through the bottom of their paper cup with the Popsicle stick. Then glue the groundhog onto the end of the Popsicle stick. Students can move the stick up and down so their groundhog can peak out of his borrow.
